Unexpected Kindness from an “Angel Webmaster”

This was first published on Facebook and Twitter today, September 6, 2021.

Sometime in the midpoint of August, a total stranger sent me an email seeking my approval to give my website a facelift— for free! Although I’d received similar offers in the past from many people, this email was detailed, earnest, reassuring, and hard to resist. After overcoming my initial hesitation that was inspired by fears of infiltration, I took him up on his offer.

Incidentally, his email came at a time many people had also proposed that I monetize the content of my blog, especially the archive of my past grammar columns, by erecting a paywall around them.

I almost gave in to the pressure to lock certain articles on my blog in a paywall and to start a subscription-based service for my language columns until I accepted the offer from this “angel web developer” to rejig my blog.

Now, how do I justify charging a fee to read certain articles on my blog when someone who appreciates what I do spruced it up for free?

If you visit my website at www.farooqkperogi.com, which many telecommunications companies have sadly blocked in Nigeria on the orders of the federal government, you will notice a complete overhaul. It is now more intuitive, user-friendly, and esthetically appealing. (You can access it via VPN if your telecom company has blocked it).

The credit for the new, swanky look that my website wears goes to Lagos-based Lizeda Media Services, which embodies an example of the youth-led burgeoning tech industry in Nigeria that is making a splash all over the world not because of the government but in spite of it.

If you like what you see on my blog—or support my social, political, and intellectual interventions in Nigeria—I urge you to support this company by using them or recommending them to people who need web design and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services.

I learned a lot from interacting with the young man in charge of the company and will be recommending his company to many people. The company's number is +2349059669216 should you need to reach out to them.
