Google Scholar just alerted me to another citation of my work in what has turned out to be yet another AI slop masquerading as scholarship.

In my June 28, 2025, column titled "AI’s Threat to Journalism, Scholarship, and Self-Expression," I warned that unchecked reliance on AI chatbots for scholarly writing might lead to absurdities. Well, folks, behold Exhibit A.

A supposedly "peer-reviewed" journal paper cited my 2020 book to support findings from a "2024 investigative study," which is a chronological impossibility.

Yes, my book apparently traveled four years forward in time to become the foundation for future research. Either my ideas are transcendentally clairvoyant, or some AI bot got a bit too creative (or confused?) about timelines.

I'm choosing kindness and humor over exposure, so I won't disclose the identities of these fraudulent, time-traveling, AI-assisted "scholars."

In these difficult times, I don’t want to be the reason why some people lose their jobs. They know themselves, though, and I expose they can live with their conscience if this disreputable AI bunkum becomes the basis for their next promotion.

Seriously, let's use AI responsibly. Scholarship isn't science fiction.

The moral of the story is that chronology matters. Authenticity matters. And, for heaven's sake, don't let your AI cite references from the future. The space-time continuum depends on it!
