Gwamna as Gombe Governor?

I just read that Gombe APC has settled on a man whose last name is Gwamna as its consensus candidate for governor in 2027. His full name is Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna.

For non-Hausa speakers, gwamna is simply the domesticated version of “governor.” So, if he wins, Hausa headline writers won’t need to do any work at all. His name will write the news for them.

Imagine the headlines:

“Gwamna ya zama gwamna.” (Gwamna has become governor. Or, more correctly, Governor has become Governor.)

“Gwamna, gwamnan Gombe, ya rantse.” (Gwamna, the governor of Gombe, sworn in. Or, Governor, the governor of Gombe, sworn in.)

“An zabi Gwamna gwamna.” (Gwamna elected governor. Or Governor elected governor.)

“Gwamnan Gombe Gwamna ya gana da gwamnoni.” (Governor Gwamna meets with governors. Or Governor Governor meets with governors.)

“Gwamna ya gode wa gwamna.” (Gwamna thanks the governor… meaning himself, or perhaps the office.)

It gets better in speech. A radio announcer could say, “Yanzu gwamna zai yi jawabi,” and listeners might briefly wonder if that’s a general statement about governors or a very specific instruction for Mr. Gwamna to speak.

If he ever loses an election: “Gwamna bai zama gwamna ba.”

If he wins re-election: “An sake zabar Gwamna a matsayin gwamna.”

Were he to become the chairman of the Nigerian Governor's Forum, the headline would be, "Gwamna ya zama gwamnan gwamnoni.

If there’s a scandal: “Gwamna ya ce ba gwamna bane ya aikata hakan.” (Gwamna says it wasn’t the governor who did it.)

At some point the language itself may file a complaint for overuse.

You do wonder if this was long-term family branding. Most people name their children after virtues or ancestors. This one seems to have aimed straight for the job title.
