One Professor Alkasum Abba told Trust TV yesterday that a Fulani man has never been president and that Muhammadu Buhari and Shehu Shagari were not Fulani.
Well, here's Buhari at 18 writing "I am a Fulani" in his application letter to join the military in October 1961.
I also have Shagari's autobiography titled "Beckoned to Serve." On page 2 of the book, he wrote that he is paternally Fulani from the "Alibawa" clan and also maternally Fulani from the "Yolorbawa" clan.
So, unlike Buhari who was only paternally Fulani (his mother was Kanuri and Hausa), Shagari was full-blooded Fulani, from his own admission.
You can't sit in the luxury of an easy chair in a TV studio and casually redefine who people are without any shred of evidence beyond the vapors of your mind and expect people to take you seriously.
I hope this Professor Abba isn't the same former firebrand Marxist scholar at ABU who was the late Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman's protege. If he is, he may be battling the ravages of old age.
Maybe we should cut him some slack because any of us who is lucky to get that old may suffer that kind of cognitive unravelling. And I don't say this with ageist intentions.
